My first book, picked by Loris Sengwiza, is entitled "U.S.
Economy Policy Toward Africa"(1). The book talks about how and why the
U.S. is interested in the success of African economy. On page 15 of the
book it is says: "For instance, the foreign aid appropriations legislation
for 1991 declared in part that the purpose of DFA was "to help the poor
majority of men and women in sub-Saharan Africa to participate in a process of
long-term development through economic growth that is equitable, participatory,
environmentally sustainable, and self-reliant."In fact I did not read the
book so let's not go too far.
My next book is entitled
"Loud and Clear: How to prepare and deliver effective business and
technical presentations"(2). It was selected by Elena Galkina, and talks
about principles for making good presentations in a business or technical
environment. I found on page 15 that: "A costly plan of action may prove
to be the ideal solution in a given situation." I do not understand it
quite that well.
The third book was
"Islam Without Fear" (3), picked by Toure L Mohamed. This book is
about "the story of a group of centrist Islamist intellectuals who call
themselves the "New Islamic Trend." On page 15 it
says: "With exaggerated seriousness, the prominent Islamic columnist
Ahmed Bahgat reports in al Ahram of August 13, 1995, on "breaking
news" from the art world." I don't like to talk about religion, so we
will stop here.
The fourth book
is "Horse Thief"(4), that Abdulmohsen Alkahtani picked. It is
about a guy named Tullis Yoder, who likes rodeo horses. On page 15 I found:
"Only merriment as they nipped and nuzzledone another." The
introduction says that he lost two fingers in a rodeo show.
Book #5 was
picked by ZeYu Chen, and the tilte of it is "The Opium War,
1840-1842"(5). On page 15 is written: "The south China city of Canton
lies in the latitude of Calcutta, Mecca, and Havana, on the left bank of the
Canton River seventy-five miles from the sea." It is about an important
story in China.
